Club Courage, formerly Rainbows, is a six-week support group for children who are grieving either through the death of a loved one, divorce, separation, incarceration or deployment. Children participate in activities that promote self-esteem, encourage self-healing and provide an outlet for unexpressed emotions. The supportive environment helps each child develop healthy coping skills through a variety of grief exercises. The ultimate goal of Club Courage is to help build self confidence, trust and an understanding of the grief process. Children in kindergarten through 12th grade who are grieving through a loss are encouraged to participate.
The next Club Courage session is scheduled for the fall 2010. Registration will be open in late summer 2010.

Club Courage exists in part because of generous volunteers. Our volunteers give their time, expertise and love to work with children who need healing and hope. Applications are accepted from licensed counselors and social workers as well as individuals who have experienced grief first-hand and want to support others through the process. Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis and are reviewed accordingly.
Counselors: All counselors are required to attend Club Courage training and are asked to facilitate age-specific groups in the six-week program

Hendrick Hospice Care opened its doors to Abilene and its surrounding communities in 1983 with a mission to provide physical, medical, emotional and spiritual care to terminally ill patients. This care and support continues for families as they face the pain of loss and the difficult journey of grief.
Hendrick Hospice Care recognized a community need to address the grief children experience through death, divorce, separation, incarceration and even deployment. Club Courage, then Rainbows, began in the late 90s as a natural extension of the Hendrick Hospice Care's mission.
Club Courage meets at Southern Hills Church of Christ, located 3666 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene. Two sessions for kindergartners through 12th graders occur within the school year, beginning in September and January. Weekly group meetings throughout the six-week period include activities centered around helping each child express emotions in coping with their grief.
The purpose of Club Courage is multi-dimensional and includes helping each child to:
-
Identify and express feelings
-
Feel acceptance and understanding of what has happened
-
Build self-esteem
-
Receive love and support to help them through grief
Club Courage is free community service of Hendrick Hospice Care through donations to Children's Miracle Network.
