MRI: Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Hendrick Health offers magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) services at multiple locations in Abilene and Brownwood. The staff is available seven days a week and is on call 24/7 for emergencies. We work with specialized radiologists who interpret your study, assuring a precise report. Hendrick is the only facility in the area capable of advanced monitoring by the anesthesia department if necessary.

Cutting-edge MRI technology produces better soft-tissue images than X-rays or CT and is often used to image the brain, spine, thorax, breast, vascular system and musculoskeletal system, such as the knee and shoulder. It uses no radiation, and no side effects of the magnet have been found. It is the best way to visualize and image nerves.

What to Expect

MRI can be a lengthy study, but the information can be vital. In some instances, technologists use a coil to help control and receive the signal sent into and back from your body. You will be asked to remain very still during your examination for an optimal study. Once the large tube (called a gantry) is activated, you will hear a series of loud clicks and bangs. There are headphones available if the sound is bothersome to you. Sometimes the MRI technologist will need to start an IV to inject a contrast called gadolinium, which helps highlight anatomy.
